Remote signing has become normal in many areas. Ontario notarization has not caught up, and assuming otherwise can leave you with a document that does not count.
Remote commissioning and online notarization are not the same. Ontario allows a commissioner to administer an oath or declaration remotely, under specific conditions, with a modified jurat noting it was done remotely. Notarization is different: a notary must generally be physically present with the person when notarizing a document.
Because so much can now be done by video, people assume notarization can too. It generally cannot in Ontario. A document that needed to be notarized in person, but was handled as if it could be done online, may simply not be valid for its purpose, which can be discovered too late.
We advise on whether your document needs commissioning or notarization, handle remote commissioning where it is permitted, and provide in-person notarization where the law and your document require it.

Book a Consultation
