A franchise can be a path to owning a business. Ontario law gives buyers real protection, but only if you understand it before you sign.
Under Ontario's franchise legislation, a franchisor must give a prospective franchisee a disclosure document at least 14 days before the franchisee signs any agreement or makes any payment. The document must contain the material facts a buyer needs to make an informed decision.
If the disclosure document is late or deficient, the franchisee may rescind the agreement within 60 days of receiving it. If no disclosure document is ever provided, the right to rescind can extend to two years. These are powerful remedies, but they depend on acting within strict timelines.
A franchise is a long-term, heavily documented relationship. Having the disclosure document and agreement reviewed before you sign is how a buyer avoids being locked into terms they did not fully understand.
