Express Entry Changes on 3 November 2026: New Points, and the End of the LMIA Job Offer Rule

IRCC is changing how Express Entry scores job offers and Canadian work experience. If a job offer is part of your plan, there is a deadline you cannot miss.

What changed

On 16 October 2026, IRCC announced changes to the Express Entry Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) that take effect on 3 November 2026. There are two changes that matter to most candidates.

First, a new Labour Market Integration factor rewards candidates for eligible Canadian work experience or for a qualifying job offer in a high-wage occupation. You receive points for one or the other, whichever gives you more, not for both added together. The maximum is 150 points for a candidate without an accompanying spouse or common-law partner, and 140 points with one.

Second, and this is the change people have waited years for: as of 3 November 2026, a labour market impact assessment (LMIA) is no longer required for a qualifying job offer to earn these points or to meet the job offer requirements of the Federal Skilled Worker and Federal Skilled Trades programs. IRCC will still confirm that the offer is genuine and meets program rules.

The dates that matter

16 October 2026: the changes were announced.
Before 3 November 2026: if you want points for a qualifying job offer, you must update your Express Entry profile with the required information before this date.
3 November 2026: the new points system takes effect. IRCC automatically recalculates everyone already in the pool, which may take up to two weeks, and invitation rounds are paused during that recalculation.

What this means for you

If you have a Canadian job offer. This is the headline change. A genuine, qualifying offer in a high-wage occupation can now add substantial points without the cost, delay and uncertainty of an LMIA. But "qualifying" and "high-wage" are defined terms, and the profile must be updated correctly before 3 November. An offer that does not meet the definition, or a profile updated late, earns nothing.

If you have Canadian work experience but no offer. Your score may rise automatically, particularly if your experience is in a high-wage occupation. You do not need to do anything for the work-experience recalculation, but it is worth confirming that your profile accurately reflects your experience.

If you are relying on an LMIA-backed offer today. The LMIA you paid for is no longer the only route to job offer points. Before spending further on an LMIA solely for Express Entry purposes, it is worth reassessing whether you still need it.

What is a high-wage occupation

For Express Entry, a high-wage occupation is one whose median wage is at least 1.3 times the median wage of the overall Canadian workforce. This is based on the typical earnings of the occupation, not on your own current or past salary. Eligible occupations include many roles in health care, skilled trades, engineering, technology and education. IRCC maintains the official list, drawn from Job Bank, the Labour Force Survey and the Census.

The risk is in the detail. "Qualifying job offer" and "high-wage" are technical tests, and the profile change has a hard deadline of 3 November 2026. Getting the occupation classification or the profile entry wrong can cost you an invitation, or worse, raise a misrepresentation concern. If a job offer is central to your plan, have the offer and the profile reviewed before the deadline.

How we can help

We assess whether your job offer qualifies and whether your occupation is high-wage, update the profile correctly and on time, and build the strongest CRS position available to you under the new rules. Where a refusal or a profile error has already cost you, we also handle reconsideration and judicial review.
