Since Canada joined the Hague Apostille Convention, a single apostille now does what used to take notarization, provincial authentication and consular legalization.
Since the Hague Apostille Convention came into force for Canada in early 2024, documents going to other member countries are certified with a single apostille instead of the old multi-step legalization chain. For families and businesses dealing with China and elsewhere, this is a major simplification, when it is done correctly.
In Ontario, apostilles and certificates of authentication are issued by Official Documents Services (ODS), which checks the signature and seal on your document against its records before certifying. Certain documents, including those only commissioned by a commissioner for taking affidavits, and some religious documents, cannot be authenticated at all.
We prepare and notarize documents so they qualify for an apostille, and guide them through the correct route for the destination country, the first time.
Immigration, family, corporate or cross-border. We will tell you honestly what can be done, and what cannot.
